ERASE: Restore Habitats

The ERASE project - Cluster for the Environmental Regeneration of Estarreja’s Soils, which was led by Bondalti, in 2021 concluded the works contracts for the environmental remediation of the hydraulic ditch of São Filipe, in the Beduído and Veiros Union of Parishes.

Until 1975, the São Filipe Ditch had received discharges of industrial liquid effluent from various companies at the Estarreja Chemical Complex (ECC). The first phase of ERASE began in 1998 and aimed to reduce environmental liabilities related to industrial waste deposited for decades by the CQE, halting soil and groundwater contamination and environmentally recovering the surrounding areas.

This first phase of environmental remediation of the São Filipe ditch resulted in the removal of 300,000 tonnes of industrial waste and contaminated soil from the natural environment, which were placed in a Containment Structure, definitively stopping the soil contamination which had resulted from 50 years of heavy chemical industry activity.

With the conclusion of its second and last phase, the remediation works involved the removal of contaminated sediments and soils and their entire metalling, using containment barriers made of wood trunks, as well as the removal and replacement of new soil in the side strips of the rural buildings bordering it. Bringing life and natural value back to various habitats and a stream.
